Federal Protective Service (FPS)

The Federal Protective Service (FPS) is a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) responsible for safeguarding U.S. government facilities, critical infrastructure, services, and personnel. FPS plays a vital role in ensuring the security of more than 9,000 federal buildings nationwide, protecting against threats ranging from terrorism to vandalism. FPS officers and agents work closely with other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to provide comprehensive security measures, including law enforcement services, physical security assessments, and emergency response.

In addition to protecting facilities and personnel, FPS uses advanced technologies and strategies to mitigate risks and enhance the security posture of federal buildings. Their duties also include managing access control, conducting routine patrols, and coordinating with private security contractors. By maintaining a visible law enforcement presence and employing a range of protective services, FPS helps ensure the safety and continuity of government operations.
