War Assets Administration (WAA) refers to a now-defunct federal agency established by United States government towards the end of World War II. Its main role was to dispose of surplus property acquired by United States during the war. This included all property deemed unnecessary for military operations, such as ships, aircraft, vehicles, and even factory equipment and consumer goods.
The purpose of WAA was not only to dispose of these assets, but also to contribute to post-war economic stabilization. The agency directed the sale, donation or disposal of the surplus goods to various sectors including veterans, educational institutions, small businesses and foreign nations. While WAA was disbanded in 1946, its functions were transferred to other government agencies, continuing its important role in managing government surplus.
